On November 18, 2024, the Department of Trade Defense in coordination with the Department of Industry and Trade of Dien Bien Province organized a Workshop on Introducing Trade Defense Measures in Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien Province. The workshop was attended by more than 120 delegates representing the Leaders of the departments and branches that are members of the International Economic Integration Subcommittee, the Economic Infrastructure Departments of districts, towns, cities and students of Dien Bien College of Economics and Technology.
In recent years, Vietnam has paid special attention to strengthening economic cooperation with countries in Asia, Africa and Oceania to boost exports in this potential region. Vietnam has taken advantage of cooperation opportunities from bilateral Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with individual partners such as Vietnam - Japan, Vietnam - Korea, as well as multilateral FTAs through regional organizations such as ASEAN or the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Although Vietnam's exports to these markets have improved in recent times and there is still a lot of room for market expansion, there are still significant difficulties and limitations awaiting Vietnamese enterprises. One of the biggest challenges is the technical measures of countries and territories importing Vietnamese goods. In addition to the positive aspects of trade liberalization and the process of international economic integration, these technical measures can create barriers in the import market.
Among these technical measures, trade defense has emerged as one of the tools used by many WTO members. According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, 14/24 countries in the Asia, Africa and Oceania market groups have investigated 145/268 different trade defense cases against Vietnam's export goods. The countries with the most investigations are India, Turkey, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, etc.
The workshop provided state management agencies, businesses and related units in Dien Bien province with an overview of trade defense measures through a number of specific, typical cases, especially the response to cases initiated by foreign countries against Vietnam's export goods, helping businesses not only proactively improve their response capacity but also build a suitable development and export roadmap towards protecting the interests of domestic manufacturing industries, contributing to the stable and sustainable development of the local economy.
